Tomek Ducki’s “Łaźnia” is having a great run at successive festivals including Fantoche in Switzerland and Cinanima in Portugal.

Currently, in cooperation with Planet Nemo Animation from France, SMF is working on the 2nd season of “Bali” series and a 25-minute TV special titled “Tamara, don’t worry”, plus it has partnered with Illuminated Films from the UK – the creators of “Little Princess” – for the “Joyetes” series for children by Magda Osińska.

SMF has had the honor to cooperate with the director of the award-winning “The path to beyond” – Anca Damian who is working with them on an animated feature film entitled “The Magic Mountain” to be shown in cinemas – which is currently in its pre-production stage.

Agnieszka Sadurska is the creator of a series titled “The stormy cloud Odyssey” in which two dwarwes – Pikulik and Oświrek – go on a magical mystery tour through time and space. The preparatory works are underway, and the 13-episode series will be ready in 2 years.

With their oldies but goldies, as well as some recent stuff, SMF’s official Youtube channel is becoming more and more popular among the Internet users – it has 6 000—10 000 hits every day.

Representatives of institutions, which actively promote animated film – such as the Krakow Film Foundation and the Polish Animation Producers Association were also present at the stand. This year’s stand highlighted „Loving Vincent” project – a feature lenght painting animation in production directed by Dorota Kobiela and produced by Breakthru Films.

A concert of Jacaszek Trio was held during the cocktail and accompanied by the screening of fragments of „Mami Fatale” series (dir. Łukasz Kacprowicz; prod. GS Animation, Studio Miniatur Filmowych). The participation in MIFA brings  an opportunity of  expanding contacts and exchanging experiences. Polish producers bring to France  projects at different stages of production and often find new partners at MIFA.

MIFA (17-19.06.2015, Annecy, France) held parallel to the Annecy International Film Festival is one of the oldest and largest events aimed at the animation professionals. This year marked the 30th anniversary of MIFA that gathered the record number of delegates. SPPA acts as a partner of a report that was commissioned by Film Commission Poland

At the end of October, the works on the report on Polish animated film sector and VFX will end. The main objective of the enterprise is to evaluate the economic, technological and developmental potential of the market. The report is being prepared by the experts from the ECORYS Poland company on behalf of Film Commission Poland, with the support of Polish Animation Producers Association.

collapseenroll

Animated films constitute an extremely profitable part of the international film industry, foreign animated films are triumphant at thePolish box-office, while Polish productions are successful mainly… abroad. Though the potential of Polish animated film industry is noticeable, the current market situation makes it difficult to use it. The research on the present situation in the Polish animated film industry, commissioned by Film Commission Poland and conducted by the Polish division of the international consulting company ECORYS, is to help with this. The project is financially supported by Polish Film Institute, and Polish Animation Producers Association is the enterprise’s partner.

How does the system for supporting animated film really look like today? What are the sources of financing the animated film production? What should they be? Will animated films continue to be made primarily in small studios, which earn their living by making advertisements, special effects and applied animation? And finally – what results from the noticeable symptoms of the industry growth?

The main objective of the enterprise is to evaluate the economic, technological and developmental potential of Polish animated film sector and VFX. On the basis of the research, a report will be written, which will be the material promoting the aforementioned sector, depicting its growth potential and widely understood profits for other creative industries, resulting from the development of the animated film industry in Poland. Also, the needs and development barriers of the industry will be recognised, and recommendations concerning support of the sector will be elaborated.

The VAF competition this year included a record-breaking number of 44 short films and 18 TV series in development. The jury that comprised of representatives of TV broadcasters from Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hugary and Estonia after long discussions announced the names of the winners. The award for Best Short Film goes to „Operation Burning Corset” by two Hungarian directors Zsuzsann Kreif and Éva Katinka Bognárs, graduates of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest. This category unusually awarded two jury special mentions. One went to the project „Egg” by Danish director Marina Scarpelli. It is an animated document portraying a woman’s fight with anorexia. The second special mention goes to the project „Superbia” by Hungarian director Lucy Tóth. It describes the country of Superbia where the natives create independent societies. It is worth adding that short film pitching was preceded by the presentation of the last year’s winner – „The Advisers of King Hydrops” by Natalia Brożyńska. Anna Mroczek, who represented the producer – WJTeam – presented the project by showing some fragments and describing the stages of the production process.

Section TV Series in Development was won by Czech author Vojtěch Domlátil with his project „Kitchen Tales”. It is a unique project in terms of its visual and its narrative that builds on specific Czech animation and leads the viewer into a kitchen that has come to life.

Hungarian author Iván Tamás was awarded a special mention by the jury for his project „How the World Began?”. The project will be filmed as a 2D series and the jury was intrigued by it innovative graphic design.

The organisers have managed to establish cooperation with the prestigious pan-European Cartoon Forum (CF) and negotiated lecturer exchanges and also participation of the winning TV series in development in the September CF competition held in Toulouse. The winning project will also get additional lecturing by the Czech Television which means that it will have a bigger change to make a lasting impression at Europe’s biggest pitching platform.

Poland was represented by the „Bubblebit and Miau” directed by David Tousk, produced by GS Animation.

The VAF programme has been expanded by non-competition series in development pitching, case studies, TV series distribution and distribution feedback for the presented projects.  Two Polish series in production were presented during the meeting – „Casparade” by Human Ark and „Basia” by GS Animation.

VAF has also held a TV round table with Cinematography Fund director Helena Bezděk-Fraňková and its board member Jiří Kubíček. The panel addressed the future of Czech cinema which has to, as every other cinema, raise new generations of audiences. Support of high-quality works for children should therefore be one of the priorities of the Fund as most of the European countries that can today boast quality films that effortlessly draws audiences has chosen this path.

The most interesting programme of the Short Films Section was again film projects pitching. But also the panel on new distribution possibilities of short films, school distribution and film education attracted attention.

Visegrad Animation Rallye is another programme novelty of the forum. It is a presentation module for the best animated works created during the last year in the V4 countries. This presentation will continue on other festival and markets focusing on animated film. This will ensure that our best film will be presented to the whole Europe.

Visegrad Animation Forum is the biggest Central and East-European platform for professional education, creation of coproduction collaborations, opportunities to get project funding and also for presenting the most successful projects created in the region. Both in the field of animated shorts and TV series, VAF brings opportunities to meet the authors, producers, broadcasters, distributors and film professionals from Central and Eastern Europe.

VAF was created by the Association of Czech Animation Film (ASAF) which is represented by Czech producers and their studios. Firs event and presentation of our region in connection with was held at the MIFA 2013 in Annecy. The first Czech presentation was organised at the 2013 Anifilm in Třeboň. This year’s edition was organised with the help association of animated films from Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and the the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest.

Polish involvement as a partner of VAF was supported by the Polish Film Institute, Polish Filmmakers Association, Polish Institute in Prague, Animowany.pl, Audiowizualni.pl and KIPA.

The Association’s promotion at various events took place via SPPA’s presentation in an event’s folder and on promoting displays. The Association’s representatives took an active part in the said events.

Location

The Annecy Festival and MIFA animation market (09-14.06.2014 – Annecy, France) took place during the international animated film festival in Annecy. This is one of the oldest and most important events connected with the animated film sector around the world. Every year it gathers approximately 2400 professionals connected with production, sale, or distribution of animated films. Stands in the market venue feature with achievements of animation producers from 63 countries from around the world. Participation in MIFA market for the majority of producers, including SPPA founders, are a mandatory objective connected with promoting or financing their own film productions. MIFA is the best place for Polish producers to expand their knowledge of production, co-production, or financing films, and most importantly to establish new contacts which can be beneficial in the Polish animated films sector.

Cartoon Forum (23- 26.09.2014 – Toulouse, France) gathers over 250 representatives of worldwide media and production and distribution companies interested in investing in the best animated series projects currently in production or at the development stage. Cartoon Forum is a prestigious industry event gathering groups dealing with animated series. It has been successfully leading to the performance of series projects since 1990. In the course of the Forum, we are planning to attend numerous meetings with potential investors, producers, sales agents, representatives of TV stations and of international animation fairs. Participation of SPPA representatives in Cartoon Forum has gross significance for the Polish production of animated series.

Cartoon Finance (26-28.11.2014 – Belfast, Ireland) is a seminar on traditional and new manners of financing animated series. It aims at making producers aware of new methods for adapting their projects to the dynamically developing animation market around the world.

Looking at successive development of Polish animated series in recent years, Cartoon Finance is becoming a highly relevant spot on the map of SPPA and every Polish animation producer.

Brief characteristic the task

During three days the stand was visited by dozens of market guests. The visiting guest were given a detailed information regarding the latest artistic animated films – that are well known by festival goers accross the globe, as well as information regarding the Polish animation market. The SPPA folder that was prepared for the purposes of the event raised the biggest intrest among the visiting guests.

Aside from participation of Polish producers and SPPA members in the Polish national stand the SPPA in collaboration with Krakow Film Foudation and PFI support has organised the Polish koktail. The event proved extremely popular among the market guests. Among the guests that have joined the event there were both partners with whom the proudcers collaborate on a daily basis as well as some brand new collaborators.
